Obituary of Gary Robert Hope

Obituary We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Gary Hope. Gary Robert Hope was born May 22, 1950, in Langley BC and was the first child to Bob and Jean (Wheeler) Hope. The family lived in Langley for about five years and then moved to Bellingham Washington and it was there that Gary started school. The family moved to Sharp Park California and briefly lived in a house that Gary fondly remembers overlooking the ocean. In 1957 the family moved to Edmonton and then Winnipeg became their home from 1958 until 1964. In 1964 the family relocated to Calgary where they stayed for four years, and it was at that time Gary left home as a young man to start the next chapter of life for himself. Gary’s first career was as a lifeguard when he moved to Didsbury Alberta. It was during this time that Gary met his first wife and was married in 1969. The married couple moved to Lethbridge in order for Gary to attend University but unfortunately, due to lack of funds, Gary was not able to complete his degree. It was during this time that Gary’s first born, Lisa, arrived – March 31, 1970. In 1971 Gary started his second career when he made the decision to follow his dream to become an Air Traffic Controller, so off to Ottawa the family went so that Gary was able to attend ATC Training. After completing the rigorous six-month training course, Gary’s first posting was in Lethbridge Alberta at the local airport tower. In July of 1972 Gary was transferred to the Yellowknife Airport Traffic Control where the family lived until March 1973 at which time Gary was transferred again, this time to the Edmonton Area Control Centre. It was in Edmonton/Leduc that Gary’s second daughter Anita was born – November 27, 1973. In 1977 Gary was once again transferred, this time to Calgary and stayed there until 1980 at which time Gary changed careers. In 1980 the family moved to Fort St John and Gary has been in FSJ ever since. He took ownership of The Lube Tube in 1981 but unfortunately due to the economic downturn his business did not survive. Anyone that has known Gary personally will know what a skilled carpenter he was, producing many beautiful masterpieces as well as his perfection in building and finishing homes. This served him (and his customers) well during his employment at Windsor Plywood from 1994 to 2004, The Cabinet Gallery for two years after that and finishing his work career at Embleton Construction for 8 years until his retirement. In 1994 Gary met Roseanne Billey at which time they became a couple and have been together ever since. They have enjoyed a busy and fruitful life together, using their skills and hard work on many projects including the renovation of two homes together. Work they both found rewarding. Gary passed away peacefully on September 7, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. He will be missed by many, with his calm demeanor, quick smile, and friendly nature. Gary did not wish to have a service, but friends and family are welcome to drop by Gary and Roseanne’s home any time to share condolences and visit.
