Obituary of Maria Vopicka

Obituary Maria E. Vopicka February 12, 1927 - April 13, 2015 It is with much sadness the families of Maria Vopicka announce her passing away at the Peace Villa in Fort St. John. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements entrusted to the care of Hamre's Funeral Chapel. If so desired expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group, or the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation Peace Villa Fund. Maria was born to Rozalia Suchonova and Joseph Tomasta of Zavar Czechoslovakia on Feb. 12, 1927. She came to Canada at the age of 9 on Dec. 26, 1936 on the Moncalm to meet her father in Coaldale, Alberta. She worked around the farm on the sugar beet fields while growing up.That's how she met her future husband. She was an extremely hard worker especially before machinery was invented!! She married Joseph Vopicka in Nov. 1947 and moved to Farmington, B.C. before moving to Pineview to work the land and homestead. They retired to Fort St. John in 1982 where they were active in the Seniors community and the many sports, cards et al. They loved traveling and attended numerous senior games as competitors. Her life revolved around family. She was always up for a game with her grandchildren. Sadly she has spent most of the last 15 years afflicted by the Alzheimers disease and her home has been the North Peace Care HOme or Peace Villa. She passed away from cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Joseph, son Jerry. She is survived by her daughters Joan (Nelson) Kinnaird, Debora (Wayne) Edwards, step brother Miro (Lydia) Tomasta and step sister Patricia Cajka, her daughter in law Linda (Jerry), sister in law Vlasta Verdzak, brother in law Jerry (Marie) Vopicka. Grandchildren Shane (Krista) Vopicka, Reilly (Jennette) Vopicka, Kori-Ann (Dennis) Barclay, Wayne & Serena Edwards along with great grandsons, Griffin & Remington Barclay and Rowen Vopicka. Also many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to send sincere appreciation & gratitude to the many caregivers and support given to Maria over this long journey. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. If family or friends so desire memorial contributions to the FSJ Alzheimers Support Group 9812 - 108 Ave. Fort St. John, B.C.
