Obituary of Lotte Hinteregger

Obituary Charlotte (Lotte) Hinteregger, age 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, April 24, 2015. She was born on December 10th, 1929 in Austria and was the youngest of five children. Lotte was a long-time resident of Fort St John, she and her husband Frank arrived here in the Peace Region in 1970. Her life journey started in Bad Hofgastein, Austria. In Austria, she married Frank in 1949 and had two children Peter and Margrit. Frank and Lotte decided to move to Canada. As many immigrating did, Frank came to Canada first, to get a job, and set up a household for Lotte to follow some months later. She travelled with her two young children, arriving in Canada at what is now known as Pier 21 in Halifax. From there she crossed the country by train; in Vancouver, the journey continued to Pioneer Mine. This was a remote mining community north of Pemberton, BC. Eventually, the family moved to the Vancouver area and here Lotte took on a number of jobs. One particular position was a cook at a drive-in restaurant. She told this story jokingly, with having no experience as a cook, but was hired because the owner assumed "all" Austrians were good cooks. She then worked together with Frank in their flooring store, which was located in New Westminster. Lotte ran everything in the office; her true calling as a businesswoman and entrepreneur. Through the mid 1950's she continued to be fully involved in any business she and Frank had. It was during her time at the coast that Lotte got her pilot's license. Frank was getting his, and she decided it would be a good idea for her as well. They bought their first plane, a Stinson, and the two were usually off in the skies from then on. The next move was to Prince George, and a number of years later to Fort St John, again Lotte and Frank continued with their business ventures: home construction, and their last business Computercraft: one of the first computer stores in Fort St John. The two first retired in the mid 1970's and started to enjoy their flying passion full time. Her involvement with the Wide Sky Flying Club; Lotte could often be seen flying the tow plane which pulled the glider until airborne. Many times, she ferried Frank in the glider over long distances; Lotte was an avid pilot. At one point, she decided it was not enough to fly the plane, but she needed to try skydiving. Without telling Frank, she became one of the few women who had dove in the region, at that time. The next accomplishment was to fly a floatplane. Her sense of adventure and love of challenging herself allowed her to experience so much in her life. She was an inspiring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whose independence and love of adventure is shown through her children and grandchildren. Some of her favorite moments were spending time with her grandchildren and entertaining friends and family at their lake cottage. Lotte loved watching her grandchildren grow and was engaged with each one's aspirations and career goals. She had other talents; making the best apple strudel and German potato salad ever, she liked to make herbal medicines and used them frequently, she gardened, and at one time, she tried her hand at pottery. She had two children, Margrit Henning and Peter Hinteregger. Lotte had seven grandchildren, Matthew, Simone, Adam, Darren, Justin, Kyle, Amanda, and four great grandchildren, Caeden, Jackson, Aivley, and Simon. Lotte touched our hearts and lives; she will be sorely missed but we all know she is now where she loved to be, amongst the clouds.
