Obituary "Any Cribbage Players in the House?"
Gerald "Neil" Thompson was born on Nov 22, 1941 in Grande Prairie AB to parents Lawrence and Marguerite Thompson. After high school, he embarked on a career with Transport Canada as a weatherman, Officer-in-Charge, fireman, electrician and contractor. This career path paired well with earning his commercial pilots licence and, along with a few close friends, launching a gliding club and continuing a lifelong passion for aviation. In recent years, when locals dubbed him the Mayor of the FSJ Airport, he accepted this notion warmly.
Neil was a great family man and a loving father. He married Phyllis Lynne Bryenton in Grande Prairie in 1963 and they had three children together, Sam, Russ and Heather (Nelson). He will be deeply missed by his children, their loved ones Shannon, Tamara and Dale, his brother David, sister Iris and a wealth of extended family and friends. He cherished his memories of his sister Dianne who passed away in 1996. During retirement, many of his favourite memories were from spending time with grandchildren Clayton, Chicayla, Danelle and Dalen.
Neil was a socially active man who was deeply involved in community efforts favouring environmental stewardship. He enjoyed flying, sailing and tinkering to make something good just a bit better. His family and friends will always remember him as a steadfastly kind and genuine man who cared fiercely for those around him. Rest assured, he is now reunited with pre-deceased loved ones, dispensing charm one cribbage match at a time.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 1pm on Sun, June 10 at the Fort St John Legion. All are welcome to attend, share memories and celebrate Neil's life.
