Obituary of Delorus Lafreniere
Obituary Delorus Violet Lafreniere was born April 20, 1936 in Ponoka, Alberta to parents Earl and Delhia Smith. Delorus had three sisters; Angie, Lilian and Earlene, as well as two brothers; Robert and Raymond. Delorus moved to Red Deer in 1942. While in her teen years she met and married her soul mate, Fern Lafreniere. They had one son named Paul. In the winter of 1963, with all their possessions, the family of three settled into Fort St. John, British Columbia. Where wooden sidewalks were replaced by cement walkways and swamp and willows were replaced by our mall and hotels, this is the place the Lafreniere's would call home. Over the years the family enjoyed the wild wonders of the north and experienced the great outdoors, watching this town grow to what it is today. Oil and gas exploration provided the family with a stable living. The Lafreniere's greatest success was being the owner and creator of Fern's Pilot and Hotshot. Delorus worked alongside Fern, performing various tasks including driving the pilot truck and keeping the books on the straight and narrow. In her later years after surviving her husband's long battle with cancer, Delorus's passion for competitive sports grew. The love she had for watching the Toronto Blue Jays and the Edmonton Oilers compete in their respective leagues. But no matter what sports were playing, Sunday night was always reserved to watch NRA Bull Riding. Delorus was so into the sport she could judge the ride close and argue any points the rider received. Delorus attended the North American Bull Riding Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her running joke was that she would pick up a cowboy someday, and she finally did. Not just one but twelve cowboys to be exact, one for each month of the year. Yes I'm talking about a Calendar. Family held a very special place in Delorus's heart. She never forgot the time Christopher dressed his little sister up in all his sweaty hockey gear, just to show her how to body check. Or how Nicole used to clean vegetables at the sink with her while making supper, and how much Andrew loved to cuddle when he was still a newborn. She took these memories with her, always having them close to her heart. Delorus had her independence but she also enjoyed the many friends she has made in Fort St. John over the years. She has now gone to join her husband but she leaves a very special place in our hearts. We know she will be watching, cheering us on to be all that we can be.
