Obituary of Roy Fedderly

Obituary Roy Fedderly was born August 24, 1924 in Mountain Park, Alberta, to parents Max and Clara (L'Hirondelle) Fedderly. His early years were spent in the Hinton/Jasper area, before his family moved to Edmonton, where he completed his schooling. While in school he had jobs delivering papers, doing chores at the butcher shop and anything to earn a bit of money. In 1940, Roy moved north and went to work on the construction of the Fort St. John Airport. A variety of jobs followed, including land clearing, trucking and working on the Alaska Highway, until he joined the Army in 1943. After being discharged in 1945 Roy once again made his way north. In 1958 Roy married his beloved Karen Gebert in Whitehorse and they spent the first few years, of their more than 50 years together, in Dawson Creek. Son's Bob and Carl were born there in 1959 and 1960. The family moved to Hudson's Hope in 1962 and stayed for just over 10 years with Roy working mostly on the Bennett Dam. 1972 brought a move to the ranch at East Pine where the cow herd was started with a purchase of "old girls" from Ed and Alice Summer. It was a change of pace for Roy, but with his thoroughness and perseverance, he was determined to give the boys new experiences and the opportunity to carry on with their lives knowing how to work. With the start of construction on the Peace Canyon Dam, Roy spent most of four years commuting back and forth to the project and working on the ranch. With completion of the project and the boys having gone off to school and work, the cattle were sold. Roy and Karen purchased a crane and moved to Fort St. John, where they have been operating Fedderly's Construction Service Ltd. since. In 1979 Roy purchased a second crane and the machines became familiar sights on various projects throughout the Northeast. Roy was well know in the area and was respected by those that he worked with. Roy made many friends along the way and always had time to visit or mentor people. He was an avid reader and could consume and understand much material in a short time. His favorite times were socializing with friends and family and enjoying Karen's great meals, especially when the grandchildren were around. Roy was a land-locked sailor, and always had an interest in boats. After considerable research, he purchased a 40 foot boat hull and spent his hours and days sourcing parts and building the "Swan Song". Although some may have considered his accomplishment a bit unorthodox, with help from many of his friends, he did launch his boat and cruise Charlie Lake for some basic "sea" trials. Roy passed away peacefully April 2, 2009. Sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving wife Karen, sons Bob (Joann), Carl (Karen), grandchildren Trevor, Dayna, Stephen, Braden and Mikayla. Sister Maxine (Bud) King, brother Bernie (Mary), many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Roy was predeceased by his parents Max and Clara, step-father Pat Scully, brother Lew and nephew Eric.
