Obituary of Emmett Smith

Obituary Emmett Smith, pioneer of the Peace Country, died peacefully at the age of 100 yrs, two month and two days, at the North Peace Care Center on May 2, 2009. Emmett was born March 1, 1909, in Missouri USA. He moved with his family to the farm near Goven Saskatchewan where he grew up. Emmett was the middle child of four brothers and six sisters. School was attended in Goven to grade thirteen. In 1928 Emmett and his brother Ross came to the North Pine area to homestead. With the exception of a few years spent at Wainwright Alberta, this is where Emmett stayed. He farmed, drove truck, operated the E.E. Smith General Store, and later drove school bus, all with the help and support of his wife of 71 years, Alice. Emmett enjoyed a multitude of activities such as playing ball, curling, bowling, golfing, pool, hunting, and fishing. Card games of crib, bridge, and pinnocle could be played anywhere, anytime. Emmett was involved in the School Board, the Masonic Lodge and later the Fort St. John Seniors Hall. Emmett and Alice moved into the Seniors Apartments in 1982 and lived there until 2007 when they both moved into the Care Facility. Alice passed away February 29, 2008. Emmett went on to celebrate his 100th birthday on March 1, 2009, where he recognized and greeted each guest by name. He always had a great memory and wonderful stories to tell. Emmett will be greatly missed by his daughter Betty (John) Zahara and family, Sharon Smith and family, Susanne (Keith) Dietz and family, eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and his sister Leatha Bealby who lives in Kelowna. Thank YouOn behalf of the Smith family we would like to thank everyone who helped celebrate Emmett's life.
