Obituary of Betty Hosker

Obituary Elizabeth Margaret Hosker, known to us as Betty was born May 10, 1931 to Pearle and Michael Hayduk of Calmar, Alberta. She was the fourth of five child and was the only girl. Betty was raised on the farm and at age 12 her mother passed away. Besides school she carried out the tasks of all the household chores including cooking for her dad and brothers. She worked in a grocery store after school was completed and this is where Alvin met her in 1953. They married on September 9, 1953. Shortly after they married, Betty and Al moved to Fort St. John. They soon started Alvin's Grocery on 100th Ave and managed to run the store between the two of them. This proved a little difficult when the children started to arrive. Betty was required to work in the store up to just a short bit before giving birth. Then in the years to follow, the kids managed to keep her very busy including one time when they stood there and watched the tub over fill while she was working in the front of the store. This turned out to be a major flood. After 5/6 years of running the store they moved to 102nd ave and Al went into the trucking business while Betty was at home with the kids, with no drivers license. It was quite some years before she got her license and was driving. Betty had to put up with some teasing from the family as her eyes weren't all too far above the steering wheel. Then in 1972 the family built a house out at Charlie Lake. This gave Betty more room for her hobby of gardening. She really liked all kinds of colorful flowers and trees. Once out at Charlie Lake Al started a hobby of racing sled dogs which kept them around home a lot. Betty figured she might as well start a dog kennel if she was going to be at home taking care of 30 sled dogs anyway. The kennel quickly grew having as many as 50 dogs through some of the busy holidays. After Al retired from sled dog racing, Betty continued with the kennel for many years. She found he niche! Even the kids didn't behave for her as well as the dogs. No matter how many dogs there where she only had to yell for them to be quiet and immediately they all would stop barking. No one else could get the same response. The one fellow made comment that if he ever mentions the kennel at home the dogs immediately jumps into the truck ready to go. Betty was fearless around the dogs including the fierce police dog, petting it before its handler got close. You can be rest assured no one at the police office would have tried this. The one shepherd did her a huge favour one day as he tried to run while she held the leash. The sudden jerk pulled her shoulder into place. It had been only slightly separated for many years giving her great pain. Betty employed the neighbor kids through these years including the grandchildren who for some reason were paid quite handsomely for their efforts. Betty will be fondly remembered by her loving husband Alvin, children Cliff, Blaine (Sherry), Daryll (Lorna) and son-in-law Rodger. Along with her grandchildren Kyle, Brandon, Janessa, Heather, Dalton, Tawny, Ben, Carly, Kevin, and Katie. She was predeceased by her daughter Beverly.
