Obituary of Leona Young
Obituary Leona Frances Robertson was born July 27th, 1924 in Kincardine Ontario. She was the eldest child of George and Elizabeth Robertson. Leona and her family lived on a farm near Kincardine, where she grew up and attended public school. Following graduation from High School, Leona attended Business College in nearby London. It was during this time she would meet her future husband William Charles Young. It was also the start of World War II, and Bill was going overseas to serve in the Canadian Army. Leona patiently waited and upon his safe return they were married at the family farm on April 9th, 1946. Soon after Bill and Leona were married they moved to Calgary where Bill started a career in the Oil patch. It was a year later when Barbara was born. From Calgary the family would move several times following the drilling rigs and it was in Regina where Joanne was born. The family continued to follow the work across the prairies and eventually moved to Fort St. John in 1957 where Leona said that was her "last move" and Fort St. John remained home for the rest of her life. Since Bill was gone so much, Leona became very active in the community. She was a charter member and the first president of the Fort St. John Oil Wives Association. Leona was a member of this organization for over 50 years. Leona was also very committed to the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was a proud member for 53 years. Even in the later years when Leona couldn't work the kitchen at the pancake breakfasts, she would be there taking money and talking with everyone who came. Leona was a stay at home mom until Joanne finished school and then she went to work for Winspear Higgins and later for Koch Oil. Upon her retirement Leona kept busy with the various clubs and always found time for a game of bridge with her friends. Leona loved to sew, crochet, knit, read and do crossword puzzles. She also bowled and curled and really loved a good bonspiel or evening spent with friends at the Legion. Although these things were some of Leona's favourite things to do, the biggest love of her and Bill's life were their grandchildren. After Bill passed away, Leona continued to live in the family home for a few years and then moved to the Lutheran Apartments and eventually to Heritage 2. The high light of Leona's last year was the arrival of great granddaughter Kaitlyn who she called "Cutie" and as frail as she was, loved to hold her and show off her pictures to everyone she knew. Leona will be sadly missed by her family and friends and will always be remembered as a kind and generous person. Donations in memory of Leona can be made to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation.
