Obituary of Amy Smith

Obituary Amy Smith -Mother, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Great-Great Grandma, Friend, Teacher, Mentor and so much more Florence Amy Stewart was born in Victoria and grew up playing in a stone quarry that today is known as Butchart Gardens. Amy had the pioneering spirit of her parents. After completing "Normal School" at Victoria College, she answered the call to teach school at North Pine. The trip involved a week by train to Edmonton and then to Hythe. From there she travelled by car to Pouce Coupe, Rolla, Taylor, Fort St John and finally to North Pine where she had a class of 22 pupils. She arrived in late September of 1930, to start the adventure that has made her such a part of the history of the Peace River Country. Amy was a lifetime member of the Women's Institute and a member of the Postmasters Association of British Columbia. She was a member of many other organizations throughout her life and was always willing to participate in any of the many projects that were undertaken by the different clubs. On January 9th, 1933 Amy Stewart married Ross Smith and together they did their part to build a community and raise their family of eleven children, who are all living today, as a witness to the value of the pioneering life we all grew up in during those early years in the North Peace. For thirty years, Amy was postmistress at North Pine and so came to know everyone. She would rather be in the garden than in the house and her flowers and berries were enjoyed by all. Summer would find her with a water pail, out picking wild cranberries, or any other fruit that dared to grow where she was picking. Amy also loved writing letters and receiving them which is how she kept in touch with her family in those early years. Amy was the most amazing grandma! She always took the time to visit and had a special relationship with each grandchild. Amy was a great role model as a mother, grandmother and friend. We can be assured that we have achieved great success in our lives if we can emulate her love, acceptance, patience, positive attitude and sense of humour. Amy was the last of her immediate family to die. She was predeceased by her husband Ross, her Mother, Father, three brothers and a sister. One granddaughter, and one great granddaughter She is survived by her eleven children and spouses, a niece and nephew in Oregon, USA, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as six great-great grandchildren. Amy lived for 26 years in Peace Lutheran Apartments in Fort St John, made many new friends and continued friendships with many of her former neighbors in the rural communities. The family would like to thank the many friends who assisted her in the years she spent in Fort St. John. We are happy and thankful for the long, good life she lived. Thanks to God for giving her the peace she was longing for. Christ commanded his apostles "to love one another as I have loved you". Amy would also command each of us to love one another as she loved each of us, and oh how she loved each and every one of us! Services
