Obituary of Alvin Hosker

Obituary Alvin Arthur Hosker Alvin Arthur Hosker was born March 22, 1933 at the family homestead on the banks of Pipestone Creek, near Wembley, Alberta to parents Art and Dorothy. Alvin's brother Bud was born 3 years later. The family moved to Fort St. John in 1943 where Alvin continued with grade school and later joined the workforce. Alvin started at Spicer's Bakery, Trinity Drilling, Regent Drilling and later worked in Calmar, Alberta where he met the love of his life, Betty. The two married on September 9, 1953 and later moved to Fort St. John, where they bought a small grocery store named "Alvin's Grocery". In 1954, a son named Cliff was born, followed by a daughter, Bev in 1955 and sons Blaine in 1957 and Daryll in 1961. Alvin joined the Fort St. John fire department in 1956 as a volunteer and later became fire chief by 1961. Shortly thereafter, Alvin left the grocery store business for the trucking business, where he and a partner started Husky trucking. As Al finished with the fire department, he was driving home one evening and was stopped by the police, who did not give him a ticket, but asked him to join the RCMP. He was an auxiliary officer for over 25 years. In 1969 Al and his partner Greg Huhn, sold Husky Trucking and Al temporarily retired. The police soon put a stop to his retirement when they talked him into taking a position as a brand inspector for the Ministry Of Agriculture. He quite enjoyed this position since it keep him in touch with local ranchers and his law enforcement background helped him tracking down stolen animals. This "temporary" position lasted for 29 years until he permanently retired. Al was active and enjoyed competition. He competed in the Rod & Gun competitions throughout the province, he raced stock cars, curled, golfed, water-skied, dog sledded and was passionate about hunting. It was in the mountains that he was the happiest. In 1972 Al and Betty decided to move again and built a home with his sons Cliff, Blaine and Daryll, in which he lived for 39 years. In the last year Al's health limited him from outdoor activities that he enjoyed so much, but he still went for lunch most Wednesdays with Walter. Alvin was pre-deceased by his daughter Bev in 2003 and his wife Betty in 2009. He is survived by his brother Bud, son-in-law Roger, sons Cliff, Blaine, Daryll and wife Lorna, grandchildren Janessa, Heather, Kyle, Brandon, Dalton, Tawny and Ben and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.
