I was quite young when I spent my years at the ranch, maybe six or seven. People were always coming and going but now that I think back chill was one of the ones that was around more often. And he was always up to something.... His curiosity was endless. Once, I'm not sure how even to this day, he cought a raven. Not a baby one but a very large one, which somehow got loose in the dining hall. On purpose perhaps ? In any case this large bird created much havoc and I was one of many who attempted to catch it. Chill eventually did get ahold of it but what fun ! He is also the mastermind that convinced a hoard of kids, myself included, to chase a young bear that was unwise enough to wander into the yard. And wouldn't you know it, the pour thing ran for its life. That is the chill I remember. Amazing, intelligent, full of fun. As well as being extremely kind and patient with the many nonsensical questions my seven year old self had for him.

people I meet, and they are most often happy memories that Chilanko was a part of. There is not a single other person who has had more of a positive impact on my youth as Chilanko Sheldon. For that, I am deeply grateful to have shared some of the short time on this earth with such a wonderful person. Peace be with you, my friend. janine island

I remember a couple of specific times I was in awe of Chilanko's musical ability. Once I remember him learning the trumpet (a very fitting instrument for the Chilanko I knew) and he practiced for hours the first day he had the trumpet. By dusk he was playing "Taps" with the perfect timbrical articulation and rubato fit for a soldier's memorial. Another time, we were late for lunch and got locked out of the dining hall because we didn't make it on time for singing "Blessed be the Tie," as we were walking back down the steps, rejected and starving, Chilanko started singing some of the hymn in perfect swing time while snapping his fingers, somehow managing to make it into a bluesy 50's kind of pop song. We both burst out laughing and went to get some carrots and beets from the garden to fill the pit in our stomachs. When it comes to mechanics, I find that I have more knowledge than most men I meet, which I owe to the fact that I spent hours of days in the old junk yard behind the shop with Chilanko taking apart old machines, appliances and vehicles and (me mostly watching him) trying to make new things out of them. He would always tell me how different motors and machines worked and would imagine ingenious ways to put them together to make something new. One time we made some wooden planes out of scrap logs and boards that had been dumped in the scrap yard. Later, I had a lucid dream that Chilanko and I were actually able to fly those planes, though they were like lead blocks in reality. At some point in time, there was a falcon that I think maybe Chilanko and some other boys rescued or something, though, I could be completely mistaken, I'm not really sure about those exact details. But I do remember they had to feed the falcon fresh mice, so they kept a bunch of live mice for that purpose. Around that same time Chilanko had taught me to shoot his small rifle. We started with cans on a stump, then he decided to shoot at some chipmunks. I got pretty upset about him shooting at animals and wouldn't talk to him for a couple days. So, when he had the mice for the falcon, he gave me one of them to keep as a pet and that cheered me up. Eventually, I got over my squeamishness about hunting animals and was on a few successful expeditions with Chili to hunt grouse, snare rabbits and even to corral some vicious pike with nets in the creek near Cottonwood. One of the last times I remember seeing Chilanko was one summer evening at Sea Lion Rock. There was a party and it was the first time I ever got a little tipsy on some wine. It had probably been a couple years since I had been to the ranch and also since I had seen Chilanko. He asked me to dance and so we danced for a bit, then went for a long hike up the hill with the dogs in the moonlight. While we walked, we reminisced about old days at the ranch and talked about our experiences in the past couple of years since we saw each other. When we returned from the walk, we sat silently on a dark porch, held hands, and stared up at the stars. I remember feeling an immense relief and joy to be reunited with a good friend and realized the depth of our friendship because I had not encountered anyone half as genuine since I left the ranch. The silence was broken by some kids walking up the road yelling about some "sitting in a tree" business. We just laughed at them. I have so many other fond memories than the ones mentioned here, like driving to Blueberry in a semi truck loaded with logs with Chili and his dad, Greg, being introduced to Dr. Pepper and The Doors, or like trying to figure out how to cook a grouse for the first time (first you have to pluck it). To me, Chilanko was a caring, generous, autonomous, and compassionate soul who taught me how to fend for myself, how to hunt, how to trust, how to laugh, how to love, and most importantly, how to be creative, which I have learned is, in and of itself, a revolution. I regret that our paths took such different directions and that I was not able to visit in more recent years, but I often reference parts of my past to people

Eulogy ~ part 1 of 2For those of you that dont know me my name is Kalen Swanson. Chilanko and the Sheldon family are very dear friends of mine. Today i have the honor of celebrating His life and sharing some thoughts and memories about him.Firstly, I would like to thank all of you who are here today, out of love for Chilanko and his family, to show how much he meant to you. Your presence and your kindness is greatly appreciated. It is humbling to see the many postings on Facebook and his tribute wall, and all the great stories everyone has shared. We have all learned in the past few days, now more than ever, how widely and deeply Chili was loved, and how many people have treasured memories of him.Chilanko Gregg Sheldon was born May 17 1981 in Mission bc. First baby boy to jane and Gregg, he weighed in at 10 pounds and was the younger brother to Andrea and Lara and future older brother to Brenna and Paden. He spent his first few years around Langley and Camp Potlatch in Howe sound, where the family wintered in a beautiful ocean setting. His love of nature was born there. The rest of his childhood was spent between whiplash ranch, port Neville, robber's knob, port McNeill, and various other places for schooling. After school, he travelled to Colorado, Japan, Whitehorse, and Homer, Alaska with his then girlfriend Crystal McPherson. He spent many years between the south coast and northern parts of British Columbia. My friend Chilanko was a funny, strong willed, determined, brilliant and inventive person, with a knack for adventure and a little mischief. He was never afraid to stand up for a friend. His loyalty and compassion was immeasurable. Chill was a deep thinker with a beautiful mind and had a way of looking at a problem from an angle most people just didn't see. Taking things apart like the VCR, toaster, and his sister Brenna's camera, just to see how they worked or to somehow fix them when others may have thought they were beyond repair.Chilli loved to build, create and invent things. Sometimes making amazing creations of ordinary everyday things or materials some would call junk. A well known memory of him was the time he made a motorbike out of a broke down chainsaw and a salvaged old bicycle. I also remember one summer at the ranch where he was scolded by the adults for sneaking spoons from the dining hall to make rings for all the girls. It is no secret that Chilanko was a very skilled and artistic at carpentry and woodworking. He helped his mother build up the family home on a piece of land she purchased north of Fort St John. Starting with setting up her modular home and finishing off by building a beautiful guest cabin on the property.I know Jane was very proud of her son's skills, and i remember her showing me the cabin he built and beaming with pride. I personally witnessed Chili constructing a magnificently intricate octagon shaped, gazebo style treehouse without drawing up any plans. The end result was remarkable and tree house became a favorite childhood hang out for many.

Eulogy ~ part 2 of 2Chili was a talented young man in many ways. His love of science made him very curious and ingenious. He loved to build and fix things big and small; from beautiful boat models to large mechanical contraptions. His building and woodworking gifts also produced a lovely intricate porch for his mom, as well as many other projects for family and friends. Chili loved pipelining and became a precise equipment operator in the oil patch. He honed his fishing skills while working with his dad on a small commercial fishing boat on the coast. He loved fly fishing as well. From a young age, Chili loved to study nature. He would often disappear on the ranch for hours to study animals. At a young age he adopted an orphaned magpie and raised it like his own, just like when he and Gregg found a baby hawksnest and he spent weeks rearing and hand feeding them worms. He was also known to spend many an hour staring up in a field, trying to understand the aerial dive of a courting nighthawk.Being an outstanding outdoorsman came easily to Chilanko. In the words of another close friend "Chili was the type of person you would want with you if you were lost in the woods, or stranded on a deserted island; he would get you home safe, or at least build you a fort out branches and leaves and start a fire with two sticks or a piece of flint."Chili, Paden and Gregg shared a love of all things military, including weaponry, the historical details and all things related to flying. He even tried his hand at flying several times, including a test flight where Paden was a passenger. He flew from Dawson creek to Fort St. John to view his home from the air.He was a sweet and sensitive person and gifts from him were always thoughtful. He made friends very easily and had a select few close friendships. His sisters and brother shared a close and loving relationship with Chili, and his family supported him fiercely through the struggles of his illness. When looking back on someone's life we sometimes feel guilt or disappointment about things we wish we had said or done while they were with us, but knowing Chili i know he would want everyone to remember the good times you shared and i believe deep down he knew how much he was loved. In closing I would like to remind you all of the bright, playful, and brilliant person Chilanko was. He touched many peoples hearts during his life and i hope he can always be remembered in that way. Let us all relish in the fact that he finally found the peace he sought with such effort in life.

A great sense of humor, extremely kind, and innocent, enjoyed having tea and working with his hands. These are just a few impressions he made in the brief moments I had the privilege of knowing him. For a while during our boyhood, chilanko and I were quite literally inseparable. It is one summer I remember in particular perhaps. As is the case with most young partnerships, summers are much more memorable than winters. It is difficult to guess the age we were , although I suppose it is of little consequence. We were carefree and free to do as we pleased with the time that we had. Both of our dads spent a lot of time in the shop, so naturally we tended to show up there on numerous occasions throughout the day. Sometimes there was nobody around which enabled us to work on projects we would never have been allowed otherwise. Most of these ideas were his I confess as I lacked the imagination to even know where to begin creating some of the things we did. Perhaps it was his complete disregard of propriety that sparked these ideas or it was a love of pushing back against those that pushed toward him. I believe he had a genius inside him; he saw things I never did. I remember being the sounding board for countless of his ideas. Many I pronounced as preposterous and promptly disregarded as either too bold or outright dangerous. Don't get me wrong, many of his ideas were tempting and of course some were too good to be denied fruition. I do not remember how it came about, but I am sure it was his idea. You see, I was never bold enough to come up with a plan to make lock picks and pilfer the then locked food room in the dining hall. A noble enough cause as there were hungry mouths around and maybe we could even be heroes amongst them, but could it actually work? As it turns out butter knives are just the right temperament of steel to do the job. So after taking a few of them we found ourselves at the shop again, and in times without supervision we began grinding these knives on the bench grinder into what we thought a lock pick should look like. I cannot say how long we worked this steel to get it right. it may have been days but finally our task was complete. Would you believe that they actually worked, cut off at about 3 inches with a hack saw and ground down to about 1/4 inch thick on the bench grinder and we were able to open pad locks, awesome. Now I don't remember picking the food room lock too many times, but the important part is his idea worked. That same summer found us taking spoons and forks with different designs and patterns, and turning them into rings to wear on our fingers though I doubt we ever donned them for fear of being caught. There were many creations including double edged throwing knives made out of old planer blades, deer antler handles for rusted buck knives and perhaps the most daring... the recycling of flat steel from the old silage machine into two handed swords, which were very short lived as I think we were busted before we even finished. We got some heat over that one. What a shame that was some fine craftsmanship. It might have been the same summer he got this idea to dig a cave into the side of a hill just overlooking the Timothy Ford. Well of course, me and some others were easily talked into it. we loved hideouts and forts. What started as a small hole soon turned into a large cave with room to stand, complete with a bench seat around the perimeter. Man did we work hard on that dig and we spent lots of time getting it perfect. Come to think of it that was where we honed our lock picking skills aforementioned. Looking back and knowing what I know now, we are lucky the cave didn't fall in on our heads. Eventually it did collapse, but the two of us and the likes of others spent that summer hiding out there like it was our sanctum. Sometimes his ideas were as simple as building a tree fort with a rope ladder or carefully crafting a cross bow from scratch, other times it was building a generator. he was constantly trying to understand how things worked; his mind was always dissecting. Sure I got into trouble sometimes because of his actions but it was worth it every step of the way. He was a best friend to me for a lot of years and I will always remember his courage, his quirks , his ingenuity a

Chili was the kind of person who had a kind heart, but put up walls around him to protect himself. I was fortunate enough to see him lower the walls and show me what he was feeling inside. We had a special connection with each other, we would message on Facebook and talk on the phone. We were always optimistic that we would see each other again soon. I can remember many times where we would talk in the phone and he would say something about the stars and how he knew that I was looking up at the same time across the country at the same stars and in that moment we were together. He was amazing. We had wonderful experiences staying out at the ranch, staying in the cabin behind Janes house, travelling to and from Whitehorse and just being together. Times weren't always great but we were there for each other. And I know that he will be waiting, and we will meet again. So sorry for the Sheldon families loss. Chili loved you all and I know he will be missed. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

as most of the ranch kids will remember, food was an ongoing adventure to acquire. we used to brake into the pantry in the dinning hall to steal food. The parents had finally gotten wise to our wicked way and put a padlock on the pantry door. We were at a loss for how to get in when chilanko came up with a genius idea of just unscrewing the latch that held the padlock. That night we feasted and went to bed full and happy at the thought that we had outsmarted the parents. i will cherish the memories of food stealing and fort building we shared in our childhood. i love you, rest easy my friend.

Summer 99 at Sea Lion Rock was doing lunch dishes in the kitchen and could hear chilanko hollaring my name outside from what sounded like somewhere high above. Stepped out the back door and looked up. There was chilli thirty feet above me. He was in the midst of planning out construction of a treehouse, he had sawed off the top of the tree and was standing on the stump way up in the air teetering and laughing. I nearly had a heart attack!!! In the next few days following he built the most magnificent tree house i have ever seen. It was beautiful. Such a talented kind soul. I will miss him forever.

Chili was at the Ranch so I asked him to go for a walk with me. It was just before the snow, everything was golden and warm, though crisp. We wandered up the hill behind the Gatehouse along the Ridge and down to the abandoned and crumpling School. Our totems have fallen though one still stands on the hill, a monument to our childhood. We climbed around and wondered this and that, sat in a desk in front of a window. My knees rubbed the bottom but I sat very proper for a photo. Chili wanted no part of pictures so I asked could I take one of our shadows and he agreed. They are cast on an old hill beneath the weight of our joined pasts; we should have held hands. When I think of Chili I remember this day, sometime in the fall of 2008. He was living at the Gatehouse enjoying the peace of the Whiplash. For one small day we shared a sweet feeling we both had for this place, quietly enjoying an old, old friendship we had known since the beginning and throughout our childhood. This time felt like a blessing as Chili was not always so calm and present in those days, and I treasure the memory. I treasure many memories of Chili. He was fair minded and compassionate, had a great sense of humor and was never shy of taking up for whoever he felt needed a friend, though it may mean he turned the ire of another's rage on himself. One time in particular, he did me a sweet turn during haying season. He overheard me asking whoever was in charge of the kitchen if I could use a can of frozen Welch's grape juice to make juice to take with me to the fields. I was denied (as food was precious out there) and really disappointed. But later that day, in the absolute worst part of the heat, when I was sweaty, covered in hay dust, hot, and thirsty, I looked up to see Chili get out of a beat up old pick up carrying a cooler jug full of juice. I could hear the ice tinkling as he walked, and I can see still the smile that was on his face. I felt a fierce rush of love for him in that moment, a feeling of glee that he had dared defy the rules, and a sense of pure comradery. He was wonderful! I will remember him always as the generous, sweet, thoughtful person he was. Rest in peace Chilanko, you are loved, missed, and remembered by many. Much love my old friend, may we walk again in the light sometime,Marie

Trucks! trucks! trucks!...Chili and his trucks!...one year I was fortunate enough to be apart of the school year by "playing teacher". Chili was there everyday physically...but his eyes and mind were on the other side of the window...especially when the rumble and roar of a large farm machine would ramble past the school. Chili had difficulty focusing on his reading and when there were only a couple weeks left of the school year...Chili was stuck between a rock and a hard place...I would have to hold him back if he couldn't read...I was in a panic and Cindy Sepp and I had tried to come up with different directions for his reading...then it dawned on me 2 weeks before the end of the year...TRUCKS!...I quickly removed his reading books and scrambled through all of the books in the school and pulled out all the young reader books that were all about trucks. Chili's eyes filled with true excitement the next morning! He couldn't believe he was going to be able to sit with me outside everyday and learn to read all of the truck books. He focused so hard and gave 150%...we would stop our lesson to watch a truck or piece of machine go by and Chili would give me quick lesson on the vehicle before it disappeared down the road...I would get excited for him for having such a grand knowledge of these trucks and machines at such a young age. Well that set me up for having my ears filled with Chili lessons everyday after that. In showing him the excitement over something he loved so much, Chili truly believed I was EXTREMELY interested!...oh Chili...you sweet soul...I just didn't have the heart to tell him I had no interest...14 days later Chili moved onto grade two with the ability to read! I was so proud of his hard work and even noticed him pick up books through out the summer and come and read for me and explain everything he had just read...Chilanko...you will never be forgotten...you will always be missed...and I truly will never look at another farm truck or machine without thinking of you and try to remember what you had taught me. Rest in Peace sweet soul...you are forever loved <3Leandra

I will always remember when the older kids would babysit my age group, Chili would let us stay up late if we did a bunch of dares. These "dares" consisted of drinking some concoction like the cup of olive oil, raw egg, soya sauce, and spices I once down to score an extra half hour of awake time; or the dares to try out one of his latest inventions like the giant sling shot. Whatever it was, it was fun and exhilarating just like Chilanko himself. Chili was an inventor, a genius, and a dreamer. His ideas were bigger than all of ours combined and he made what seem impossible, possible. He was the type of person you would want with you if you were lost in the woods, or stranded on a deserted island; he would get you home safe, or at least build you a fort out branches leaves and start a fire with two sticks or a piece or flint...
