I was saddened to learn of Danny's passing August 12, 2017. I first met Dan in 1975-76 when I moved to Fort St. John to fly for Baltic Drilling with a Cessna 206. At that time Dan was flying BXY, the DC-3, for Knight Air. I remember when he first purchased North Cariboo from Evan Dahn with 4 other partners Those were truly formative years for the growth of North Cariboo eventually into larger a/c. One cherished memory is when Dan and I flew the DC-3 at Arctic Circle Lodge providing fuel to the lodge in 1989. We ate, slept, and flew together as a tight unit for a week in 40 below conditions! Another was when I was flying Super DC-3's for a company called Sky Freighters out of Nanaimo. I was enroute to Fort Nelson for a fuel haul into Beaver Creek. As I was passing Fort St.John I went to NCA's company frequency to say hello to Danny. We said a friendly hello and he said to drop by sometime. Just as he said that my right engine quit due to water freezing in the fuel lines. I screamed into the mike, "I might be there sooner than you think Danny! Gotta go for now!" By the time we sorted out our problem I could not raise him again on radio. Such a memory. I met and respected many aviation peers in the north and many times thought of Danny over the years. Whenever I called to say hello he always took my phone call. A true man of integrity. Rest in peace Dan...

Rosemarie and Family, I send my sincere condolences. Gordon and I first met you in Melaque in church and had the opportunity to travel to Hogar de Amor in Colima to see the Unrah's and view the work they were doing with children. After our visit we were waiting for you to return to the cars so we could all go to lunch. Gordon decided to go fetch you. Instead he returned with tears in his eyes as you were viewing a book with the pictures & story of the children who needed financial and emotional support from foster parents. Dan shared he could not make a decision to take just one child as with a family of 6 to 7 children how could he choose? So you agreed to foster all of them!! You were instrumental in keeping family units together! What a legacy and impact for Christ!! I suspect Gordon and Dan will soon get together and share their love of family and of the north. So sad to hear of Dans passing saw him at Safeway buying flowers for his wife on Mothers Day and that smile when he recognize you lets you know that he is a careing person. Over the years I have flown with 30 or 40 pilots, mainly to bush airstrips or on floats and Dan was the best. If someone was needed to fly in to the depths of Hades to retrieve a lost soul or a load of freight I would go without hesitation if Dan was the pilot. To say that Dan helped shape my life is such an understatement. 40 years ago I was working for a small charter company out of Qualicum Beach and I sat at the counter in the office explaining to a pilot of a Navajo how we locals took off when the fog bank was hanging over the one end of the runway. Where would I be today if Dan hadn't flown home to Fort St. John, discussed that young pilot with his partners, and instigated an offer of a job? Regardless of where - it would not be in a place filled with rich memories of his mentorship and kindness. Rosemarie and family - thank you for sharing so much of yourselves with me. Dan,I am forever endebt to you. You personally gave me my first job as a pilot and I flew the first 50 hours of my career with you in MXY. When I walked into your office in 2005 as a fresh faced 20 year old, you hired me because I told you that I grew up on a farm. Danny was a Business friend and fellow Pilot. After recommending North Cariboo as an alternate transportation source to Petro Canada by an investigative report I wrote, Danny said, 'Jim you can fly right seat for me anytime you want'. I never did take him up on that offer but am very proud to have known him and all the Cariboo guys. Words cannot express the hole that Dan's passing has left in our lives. We have lost our best friend. He was a beautiful soul, passionate about everything he did. He did not live by words, but by example. Everyone who knows Dan knows that he was a hugger. If you offered him a handshake, he would pull you in for a bear hug. He understood what was truly important in life and made it possible for the people around him to experience things that normally they would not be able to. Nothing made him happier than seeing joy on the faces of others. He was always the romantic. Rosmarie was his soul-mate and he never hesitated to express his love for her. Dan was an exceptional business man but was one of a rare few who achieved success while maintaining his integrity and uplifting others. He never pursued success at the expense of others.Dan's friends and family can be proud knowing that he truly made the world a better place. He made lifelong connections in every place that he visited. People who only had the privilege of meeting him once or twice still comment on what a kind and wonderful man he was.Dan loved his family, his friends, the beauty of nature and his 15 minute power naps. I was a pilot in the Fort St John area, in the 1980,s I recall Danny and the group, acquired North Caribou air, which had only 2 aircraft at the time.Danny,s vision was to think improvement, which he did, with a new hanger, office and waiting room area ,at the Ft St John airport.Soon the company had new ,and more modern aircraft, including a DC3, and a Convair.Danny was and excellent business man, and the business grew and and thrived under his leadership.He always took the time to chat ,or share a story of his recent flights.He was a mentor, to the new and budding pilots, that he hired. We are part of Dan's distant relatives. But distant only because we live in Brazil. We're actually close. We were always trying to visit each other regardless the distance and he had made this effort to keep us connected personally and virtually. We love each other and really think Dan as a close family like a brother or an uncle. We are gonna miss Dan so much. But with this sure that in our memories we will always see him as our big friend that we always had a good time together. he was always that generous man, with lots of energy, big heart and so lovely. I personally, just had such a great time with Dan and family a month ago. It's not easy to understand why... Danny was my first boss in Aviation North cariboo 1985 Yeg. He was kind, loving and always ready to laugh. To this day he was the best boss I have ever had. What always stood out to me was his genuine love and respect for everyone especially his family. May God Bless all who's hearts are hurting now.
