Obituary of Warren Woodruff

Obituary Warren W. (Bud) Woodruff passed away November 10, 2017 at the age of 97 in Fort St. John, B.C. Bud was born April 18th, 1920 at Lemsford Saskatchewan, the second son of Benjamin and Emma Woodruff. He was predeceased by his parents and by his brother Henry, who died in 1984. In 1924 the family moved from Saskatchewan to Vancouver where Warren started school at Aberdeen School on Burrard Street. Returning to Forgan Saskatchewan in 1927 and Kisbey Saskatchewan in 1929 he completed his elementary schooling. In 1934 the family moved to Ladner B.C. where he completed his high school education. In 1940 he obtained a Radio Operators Certificate and spent a year at sea with the Merchant Marine, and three months with the B.C. Police as a radio operator in Vancouver. In May 1942 he joined the Department of Transport to work on the North-West Staging Route as Radio Operator and Technician. The purpose of the route was to ferry aircraft to Alaska and Russia during the 2nd World War. He worked at various stations including Fort St. John, Beatton River, Watson Lake, Whitecourt and Edmonton with a stint in Montreal, copying weather and flight plans for the North Atlantic Ferry Command. Returning to Fort St. John in 1959 he continued working at the airport until his retirement in 1977. In 1965 he operated B&B Esso with Bob McDermott and from 1977 to 1980 the family operated Corner News as a successful business. In 1949 Warren married Verna Waite. They had three children; Randall (living in Kelowna, married to Rae), Trudy of Fort St. John (married to Gary Alexander) and Clayton of Fort St. John (married to Christina) Warren was active in sports spending many happy hours hunting and fishing in the great Peace River country. He was a charter member and served on the executive of the old North Peace Baseball League, the Fort St. John Curling Club and the Lakepoint Golf and Country Club. He is survived by his wife Verna, sons Randy and Clayton, daughter Trudy as well as 8 grand-children, four great-grand children and a number of nieces and nephews. Services
