Eulogy for Our Mother, Delores TorstiTo everything there is a season, a time for everymatter under heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;a time to weep, and a time to laugh,a time to mourn, and a time to dance;a time to keep, and a time to cast away. -Ecclesiastes We are here today to remember our mother, Delores Torsti, together we can share both our joy in the gift that her life was to us, and the pain that her passing brings. In sharing the joy and the pain together today, we can remember more clearly the joy. Mom was 87 when she passed away Thursday morning, January 11th, 2018. It is hard to say goodbye. We wish that so much of her life had not been lost to Alzheimer's, that things could have been different for her, and for us. While we know that she is at peace and that her struggle here is at an end, there is sadness for us. But even though she is gone, she has left the legacy of her love. The ways she touched our lives will remain, and I ask you to keep those memories alive by sharing them with one another. One of the most important things in Mom's life was her family and extended family. She took great pride in her role as wife and mother. Her home was always impeccable and full of hospitality. She was a good friend to all who knew her and an active part of the community. My parents came to Fort St. John in 1957, as my dad became one of the first grain elevator managers here at that time. They loved the Peace Country and all the wonderful friends they made here. Our parents waited a long time to welcome my brother and I into their lives and so raising us and caring for us became their highest priority. For which we are very grateful.Mom was also a remarkable gardener. It takes patience and perseverance and a love of living things to grow a garden or a beautiful flower. Gardening is hard work, but there is something that gardeners know and experience that others sometimes do not. There is a beauty and a satisfaction in seeing the result of your labor grow and bloom and produce fruit. To me, this is just an extension of how she cared for the people in her life.As kids, we may have needed pruning from time to time, and those hours she made us shell mountains of peas only did us good. 'Spring Garden' by Helen Steiner RiceSo when I looked at those flowers,I was looking at GodFor they bloomed in His sunand grew in His sodAnd each lovely flowerwas a "voice from above"That whispered a messageof Kindness and LoveFor I feel in my heart, and I know you do, too,That God speaks to us allthrough the kind things we doAnd when I looked at those flowersI couldn't help but feelThat they brought heaven nearerand made God so real. Delores is survived by her daughter Lorri-ann (Gerry) and son Doug (Jocelyne), 15 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and her beloved sister Dorothy, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her family and her role as mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a friend were the most important things to Mom. This is where she drew her strength and left her legacy. Being with her family was what she enjoyed most of all. Her life had many obstacles in the later years, yet through it, all, her care and interest in her family remained her focus, and in many ways, she was able to show that love to us. This perseverance through adversity is a powerful lesson for us, and I believe it is her legacy. This strength came from her deep faith and love for her Lord. What a wonderful lesson she gave us. Keep your priorities straight. Keep your faith alive. Keep that which is most important in focus. Love and care for your family. Don't let adversities or setbacks or the distractions of the world keep you from this most important aspect of life. Even in the last hours of her life when I would come to see her, she would say "Oh, hi honey, how is everyone?"
