We appreciate all the Love and Support during this time for Our Family. -the Barkman Family BARKMAN, Joel Ives 1941-2018 Passed with peace on Friday evening surrounded by loving family and friends. Joel was dearly loved by his wife Carolyn; son Joel (Carmen); daughters Katherine, Sarah (John), Mary (Nathan), Ruth (Franklin); and twenty grandchildren. Joel was born in New Jersey, attended Illinois and Vermont Universities, and served in the Corp of Engineers in the Public Health System. Being a commissioned officer, Joel was posted in various states before obtaining his master's degree in Civil Sanitary Engineering. Joel was very driven in pursuing his career and further expanding his knowledge. As a young college grad, being with Public Health, he was a forerunner and instrumental in the development and standards of the Environmental Protection Agency. Over the years Joel's passion and commitment to the standards of Civil Engineering were shared with various agencies. Of note, were his years of dedication and service to Treaty 8 Tribal Association of Fort St. John, Carrier Sekani of Prince George, and McElhanney Consulting Services of Terrace. Joel's commitment to high standards and excellence will be a lasting memory to all the lives he touched and mentored. Joel was a Godly man, a devote Christian, who devoted his life in service for others. As a father and pastor, he touched many lives and inspired individuals to always "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously". He served on many church boards, and volunteered extensively throughout his years, always with the pursuit of instilling hope through Christ. Joel lived life to the fullest, enjoying the rejuvenation and solace that he found in the great outdoors. His talents were many; from being an avid cross-country skier, snowshoer- even learning the fine art of making snowshoes when needed, skilled hunter and trapper, fisherman, and carpenter from rough to finish work. Joel's love of animals was evident and shown through how he raised and cared for sheep, dog sled teams, bison, and his pet dogs. Joel was an accomplished man, with a distinguished career, yet his number one priority and first commitment was always to his first love of 52 years; his darling Lyn as he would so tenderly refer to her. Joel exemplified and modeled what true love and commitment were, as together with his wife by his side, they raised five children and lived life. From urban settings to remote primitive wilderness, Joel led his family with strength, grace, and tenderness. Truly a gentleman, his chivalry was never lost, no matter the setting. He had the joy of being blessed with twenty grandchildren, of whom brought him such delight and thankfulness. Joel's legacy will live on through each of his children and grandchildren, and the lives he touched. A Celebration of Joel's life will be held this Friday, 2:00 pm, at his daughter's house in Baldonnel. Joel leaves us rich in memories and we are forever blessed having been loved and known by him.
