Obituary of Melford W. Lumley

Obituary MELFORD WILLIAM LUMLEY – July 1, 1929 to October 18, 2018 Melford Lumley passed away peacefully in Fort St. John on October 18, 2018 at the age of 89. Melford is survived by his loving son’s Kenn & Brian (Sherry) Lumley, granddaughters Jamie (Tony) Vandal, Tiffany (Brad), Kelsey (Ryan), Stacey (Tyler), great-grandsons Marcus & Josh Vandal, Braxton, Oakley & Bentley LaClaire, Parker Graydon. His siblings Bunny, Janice, Melvin, Lawrence (Marg). Mel is predeceased by his wife Betty-Lou and sons Jim, Bruce, and Brent Lumley. Mel was born in Strathclair, Manitoba on July 1, 1929 to Robert & Hazel Lumley. He was raised in Strathclair and Clear Lake, Manitoba. On May 24, 1954 he married his best friend, Betty-Lou Gray at Riding Mountain National Park. Their children were born in Minnedosa, Manitoba. In 1971 Mel & Betty moved to Fort St. John, B.C . with their three children Jim, Kenn & Brian. Mel worked as an operator at Westcoast Transmission in Taylor, B.C. until he retired in 1992. Mel and Betty-Lou spent their retirement years camping and golfing all over Canada in the motorhome that Mel proudly built. With his passion of carpentry, he spent countless hours building many treasured items for family and friends. Several people have a special piece of his talent. Mel was a unique man. He loved to tease and tell stories. He resided at Peace Villa Care Home for his last ten months where he was known as the “Candy Man”. We always had to keep his candy supply stocked up, as he would go around with his scooter delivering candy to all. Melford loved all the attention he got from the staff, and anyone that visited. He always said that they had a big celebration with fireworks for him on every birthday, “Canada Day”! He passed away peacefully on October 18th. Mel has joined his beloved Betty-Lou and they are together again. As Melford wishes to not have a memorial service, please share memorable moments on here. Melford and Betty-Lou will return to Manitoba to rest at the Bend Cemetery. If so desired expressions of sympathy can be made to the Fort St. John General Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. Services
