Obituary Verna May Hill September 16, 1925 - February 17, 2019 We are sad to announce the passing of Verna May Hill on February 17, 2018 at the age of 93. Verna was born on September 16, 1925 in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Verna is survived by sons Gordon (Colleen), Brian (Lori), Lance (Rhonda), sister-in-law Freda Murphy, brother-in-law Rod Kuhn and many grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband Paul, son Ross, granddaughter Danielle, her parents, Archie and Mary Livingstone, brothers Gordon, John (Mona) and George (Agnes); sisters Annie (Chester), Betty, Eva (Jack), Alice (Don). Verna moved with her parents from Saskatchewan to a soldier's land settlement grant in Progress, BC., located on what was to become known as Livingstone Road. It was a difficult journey in those days and on the way her brother Gordon succumbed to illness and passed away near Wembley, Alberta. Verna attended the Provincial Normal School in Victoria, BC, 1944-45 for training as a teacher. After completing her training she returned to the Peace Country to teach school in Taylor 1945-46 and then at Pouce Coupe Central School 1946-47, teaching grades from 1 to 8. It was through her teaching posting in Taylor that Paul began to court Verna which meant many bumpy miles between Taylor and Dawson Creek and Progress to attend country dances. Verna married Paul Hill on July 7, 1947 in Dawson Creek with festivities following on the family farm in Progress. Verna was a farm wife doing her part to support the family in building a very successful farming operation. She was very proficient in making home preserves and canned fruits, jams, jellies, pickles, relish and even carrot pudding. She loved to garden and it was always a great sense of accomplishment when the first new potatoes could be robbed from the hill or the first ears of corn could be picked. She also took great enjoyment from her flower gardens. When time and health permitted she was a prolific knitter and crocheter. If one was quiet you may have been able to sneak a cookie or piece of cake from one of her carefully guarded cookie tins. As with her husband and although late to the game, Verna enjoyed curling. Together they loved old tyme music and you could often find them taking a twirl around the house when there was not a dance to attend. Verna was a member of the Baldonnel Women's Institute for many years and was the Treasurer for the Church of the Good Shepherd for over 50 years. Much of her baking, home preserves and handiwork was contributed to the annual bazaar in support of the Church. A Celebration of Life followed by a luncheon will be held on April 25, 2019, beginning at 11:00 am at the Peace Community Church, Taylor, BC. Following the luncheon Verna's remains will be interred at the Taylor Cemetery with her husband Paul and alongside son Ross. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation. Muscular Dystrophy Canada or the charity of choice in Verna's memory. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of the Peace Lutheran Apartments, Fort St. John Regional Hospital and staff, the Peace Community Church, and to all who contributed to the service and luncheon and those who offered condolences.
