I did not have the good fortune to meet Olemaun, nevertheless, my students and I have been greatly moved by her books. Olemaun's children's books provide a much needed entry point into the subject of residential schools with young children. We are very saddened to hear of her passing. Her legacy will live on as this generation gains greater awareness of the truth. We are indebted to her for her bravery and willingness to share her experiences.

OlemaunThe students and staff at Ecole Christine Morrison have been blessed to welcome Olemaun into our school community several times throughout the years.We looked forward with great anticipation to the arrival of such an inspiring individual whom we first met through her stories. We all admired her bravery in sharing her story with us so that we could have a better understanding of something few of us have experienced. After reading her story and getting to know Olemaun, students used words such as resilient, joyful, determined, resourceful, curious, strong, brave and, hopeful to describe Olemaun. These are characteristics that helped Olemaun to overcome the challenges she faced in her life and to find joy and her sense of self again. It is with great sadness that we learned of Olemauns passing. While we are sad that she is no longer with us, we are also grateful that she shared part of her life with us .We, the students, and staff of Ecole Christine Morrison, will be planting a tree in memory of Olemaun. May this tree help us remember our past and aid us in honoring the teachings of our elders so that we can create a joyful and just future. Thank you Olemaun for being such a beautiful and inspirational spirit for all of us. You will not be forgotten.

When I saw Margaret's name and photo, I wondered if she was the woman who came to Clearview school in Flatrock/Cecil Lake back in 1980/81 to my grade seven class and taught the students to make beaded leather pouches. I have held on to mine... I contained some marbles that I kept over the years. I remember that craft, but I can't remember if it was her. But seeing her and reading her story, made me wonder if it was he, like I remembered meeting her. It brought back a really nice memory of my grade seven year that wasn't all that fun to remember. Margaret was such a beautiful and gracious lady. I remember attending the book reading of her first book Fatty Legs. I bought 2 books that evening to pass onto my grandchildren.
