Obituary
Edna Esther Belle Brookes
1933-2022
Edna Esther Belle Brookes (nee Hooper) a devoted wife, mom, grandmother and great grandmother,
passed away July 25, 2022 at 88 years of age.
She was born in Colonsay, Saskatchewan on her grandfather’s couch during a snowstorm on
November 19, 1933.
Being raised on a homestead in rural Saskatchewan with her mom, dad and three brothers helped
develop her hard working attitude, and her love of nature, gardening and the outdoors. Edna
graduated from Eston Bible College and lived her life committed to her christian values. She raised
six children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She challenged all of us to high moral
standards, loved us completely and never forgot a birthday.
Living in the Peace country for over 50 years provided her with a wonderful place to raise her family,
grow beautiful flowers and help produce a large market garden.
Her hard work and creativity was endless. She was never afraid to tackle a project. She had
boundless amounts of energy and could accomplish many things each day. For every task she gave
110 % effort. She cared deeply for the environment and fixed, painted and mended broken things
instead of throwing them out. She wrote beautiful poetry, sewed clothing using her own patterns,
knitted and crocheted and somehow completed all of this while tending to the many chores and
children on the farm.
Nature and family was a large part of her life. She enjoyed bird watching and could quickly identify
any bird that she saw. She also knew the names of all the local plants, especially the wild flowers.
Her interests also included picking berries, growing fruit trees, researching natural remedies for
optimal health and connecting through letters, parcels, phone calls and family gatherings with her
children and their families.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to the Fort St John Hospital and to the Peace Villa
Care Home staff for all their care, patience and support during Edna’s last seven months of full care.
We would also like to deeply acknowledge all the love and support given to us by our friends and
family on this journey. Her pain and suffering has finally ended and she is at peace.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the charity of your choice on her behalf and/or planting
a tree, shrub or flowers in your own personal garden in her memory.
As she especially enjoyed celebrating with close friends and family around her, the family
has decided to host a gathering in her honor on Saturday August 20 at 3pm at the farm in
Taylor. A light supper will be provided. Feel free to bring a food item and memories to share!
We look forward to spending this informal and social time with all of you.
