Obituary of Mary Louise Mitchell
Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Louise Mitchell wish to announce her passing on November 5, 2022, at the Fort St. John Hospital after a sudden illness. A lifelong resident of the Peace Country, Mary was born on April 14, 1934, in Fort St. John BC to Robert and Veronique McLeod. She married Walter Mitchell on November 25, 1951, and together they raised 8 children.
Mary loved being outdoors in the summer months and the outdoors brought her much joy. Many summers were spent camping on the Peace River while her husband Walter was prospecting for gold. She loved to cook over the fire and made the best campfire coffee. Always one with nature, it was amazing to watch her charm wild animals just by speaking quietly to them. She could coax a Whiskeyjack out of the tree into her hand and even had a pet beaver down at the Peace River that would come right out of the water when she spoke to it. There was always something wild being fed in the yard by her and Walter. Weasels, prairie chickens, rabbits, foxes, and birds always had a meal at the Mitchell place during the cold winter months.
Mary was always there to babysit a grandchild when needed, and her family still use the nicknames she gave the kids/grandkids. Always ready to play cards or dice games, many family camping trips were spent at the picnic table with Grandma Mary or at the kitchen table in South Taylor. She had no issue with “cleaning out” our change purses or piggy banks.
Another one of Mary’s talents was for music. She could play guitar by ear and loved singing. She could make up songs on a whim and the little ones always got to hear her sing something special just for them.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Walter in 2021, her four brothers, Larry, Fred, Leonard and Joe McLeod, her half-siblings, John Gladue, Flora Beaver and Rose Cardinal, Granddaughter Zoey Ann, Great Grandson James and parents Robert and Veronique McLeod. She leaves to mourn her eight children, Rick (Terri), Brent (Linda), Brenda (Terry), Ron (Janet), Steve (Maureen), Gail, Karen, and Joanne (Guy). She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at Taylor in 2023.
Her family would like to send a special thank you to Brandee Nelson and all the wonderful staff at Heritage Manor for taking care of Mary the past 3 years.
