Obituary of Jacob Dueck

Jacob Dueck

April 29th, 1928 – December 7th, 2023

Jacob Dueck was born to John G. and Katharina Dueck on their farm at Hochfeld, Saskatchewan, on April 29th, 1928.  He was the fourth youngest of the 15 children who survived infancy.   He  took all of his schooling in the Passchendaele School, four miles west of Hague.  He and his siblings walked in the summertime and went by horse and caboose in the winter.  After Grade 10, he worked on his parents’ farm until they retired in the fall of 1951.  He and his brother then rented the farm.

In April of 1952, Jacob married Eileen Peters, and they continued to farm at Hochfeld until 1965.  During those years their busy little household was filled with 9 children—7 girls and 2 boys.

Jacob was baptized upon the confession of his faith in May, 1953 at Hague, SK.

In 1965, Jacob, Eileen and their 9 children moved to a homestead north of Fort St. John, BC.  This was an adventurous time for the family and the Duecks farmed there for 30 years.  In 1995, Jacob and Eileen purchased and moved into their retirement home in Fort St. John.

Over the course of the next few years, Jacob’s health became affected by dementia, and in November, 2017, he and Eileen sold their house and moved into the Peace Lutheran Apartments.  In May, 2021 he was admitted to the hospital because he could not walk.  The doctor immediately deemed him unfit to return home.  In October, 2021, he was transferred to Peace Villa Residential Care, where he remained until his death.   Early on in Jacob’s time at the hospital and Peace Villa, it became clear to the family that he would require constant one-on-one care throughout each day.   Selflessly, Eileen and daughters Cathy, Sandi, Janet, and Brenda continued scheduling themselves, as they had been doing since August, 2019, in order to be with Jacob and meet his daily needs.  There is no doubt that their tender loving care, which went far above and beyond, was a lifeline for him.  There are not enough words to express the gratitude that is due to them for the numerous hours of support they gave to Jacob throughout those challenging years.

Jacob Dueck will be lovingly remembered by Eileen, his wife of 71 years, and 8 children:  Elaine (Dave), Cathy (Rocky), Sandi (Russ), Janet (Phil), June (Eric), Robert (Debra), Alan (Lynn), and Brenda (Gene); 18 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; one sister Annie (George), one sister-in-law Bunny, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jacob was predeceased by his daughter Pauline in 2013, son-in-law Norbert in 1984, both of his parents and 15 brothers and sisters.

The family of Jacob Dueck wishes to extend a special “Thank You” to the staff at Birch Lane in Peace Villa Residential Care. The nurses and care aides provided exceptional care to Dad.  They sang, joked and laughed with him and were so patient with him.  He really enjoyed their company.  We also want to express our gratitude to Dr. Rahman for his professional services and to former nurse, Carol Ann, for stepping in to help Dad when family could not be there for him. You all were so good to Dad and our family, and we appreciate all the love and care that you provided.
