Rose (Leochko) Hetman

It is with love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Rose (Leochko) Hetman on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the age of 89.

Rose was born on June 29, 1937, in Poplarfield, Manitoba, to John and Justine Leochko. She married the love of her life, Walter Joseph Hetman, on July 8, 1961, at Holy Ghost Church in Winnipeg. Together they built a life centred on faith, family, love, and kindness.

Rose was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter; her parents, John and Justine; and her siblings Mary, Peter, Pearl, Mary, Michael, and Elsie.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Brenda Hetman (Layne Craig); her grandchildren Alana Johnson (Michael Johnson) and Jessalynn Rafter (Richard Rafter); her son, Dennis Hetman; and her grandchildren Keegan Hetman, Brady Hetman, Cody Larose (Kylalee Larose), Daniel Larose, and Parker Butler, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Rose's strong work ethic began early. At just 14 years of age, she trained as a hairstylist at Winnipeg's Scientific Marvel Beauty School and began her career at the American School of Beauty. Throughout her life she also worked as a florist, volunteered with the Order of the Royal Purple, and, while raising her family, returned to school as an adult to earn her Grade 12 diploma—an accomplishment of which she was quietly proud.

Rose found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. She loved tending her garden, especially her potatoes, and was always happy to share her garden vegetables with others. She was an accomplished crocheter, creating intricate tablecloths.

Rose's favorite holiday was Christmas and she ensured Ukrainian Traditions were upheld and taught to her family.  Family and friends eagerly anticipated her famous homemade perogies, and there was always room around her table for those she loved.

Music filled Rose's heart. She especially loved swing music and never missed an opportunity to dance with Walter. She was devoted to her Catholic faith, had a special love for the Blessed Mother, and found great comfort in Psalm 23, "The Lord is my Shepherd." She passed peacefully after receiving the blessing, anointing, and Last Rites, a great comfort to her and to her family.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Courtenay. Rose will be laid to rest beside her beloved Walter at the Courtenay Civic Cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and grace.

Rose's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who showed kindness, friendship, and care to both Rose and Walter throughout their lives.
