Bessie was the proud mother of two daughters, Rhonda and Kimberley, and two sons, Fredrik and Jay. She also mourned the loss of her baby son, Maurice, who left this world too soon. Bessie’s legacy lives on through her ten cherished grandchildren: Meghan, Jordan, Nicholas, Chelsea, Michael, Tevin, Josh, Jayden, Emma, Devon, and Julian. Each of them carries a piece of her spirit, and her love for them was a constant source of joy and pride in her life.
Bessie’s life was a testament to hard work and dedication. In 1976, she made the brave decision to move to Fort St. John, where she later settled on a farm in Buick. It was a challenging life, devoid of modern conveniences like running water, electricity, or indoor toilets, but Bessie embraced it with grace and determination. Every year, she cultivated two large vegetable gardens, providing fresh produce for her family, and tended to a variety of wild and farm animals, ensuring that her loved ones were well-fed and cared for. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond the garden, as she actively participated in her children’s lives, assisting them with 4H projects and instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance.
Bessie’s love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life. She cherished the moments spent with them, especially when they gathered nearby. Her home was a sanctuary filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of shared memories. She had a special bond with her grandchildren, often engaging them in heartfelt conversations over the phone when they were little, and she took great delight in the photographs that adorned her walls and filled her photo frames. Even though she wasn’t the best winter driver, her trusty Datsun would carry her through the snowy roads to Fort St. John each week for groceries and laundry, a testament to her determination to provide for her family.
In October of 1993, Bessie and her children moved into the city, embracing a new chapter in their lives. Though the transition brought changes, her love for her family remained constant, and she continued to be the heart of their lives.
