I was fortunate to have known John or JF as he was usually referred to by the Cahoon brothers who I worked for when I met him. I was young and always enjoyed being around him with his large laugh. It was always great to enjoy a meal with Elsie and John, Connie and Grant and listen to their stories back then.
The Cahoon brothers and John had a couple of pieces of machinery that they shared, one being a fancy new Kvernland 5 bottom plow and the other a Versatile 440 swather that they purchased at Small's farm auction west of Montney at the top of the big hill. John was looking at me sideways when Roy told me to get on it and head out, wondering if this 14 yr old kid was going to make it down that hill on that jumpy swather when I hadn't ever been on one like it. I wondered too, but we made it and he laughed about it later.
He took a lot of ribbing when his new International tractor wouldn't quite pull the 5 bottom plow when 1030 Case the Cahoons had would. He took it all in good stride.
JF and Elsie were both Fairview College alumni and encouraged me to attend when I was done school. Could always get him riled up telling him that looking at their pictures on the wall at the college, he looked a lot older but Elsie looked the same.
A lot of good memories of John. He will be missed. RIP old friend.

I met John and Elsie soon after moving to FSJ. He and I would travel to Huskies hockey games and keep each other company while the team was busy. He was kind, thoughtful and full of stories about life in the Peace - both in BC and Alberta. We shared together about ourselves and our families. I love Elsie and John!!! Rest in Peace John. You will always be in my heart.

We will always treasure John's gentle nature, his humour, his quiet strength. So many of our family stories include John and the Martin family. All of them are recounted with humour. The 'Knock Three Times' story has endured for decades. John, the instigator, Dad, enthusiastically serenading Courtesy Corner diners, Elsie, enjoying every minute, and our mom not so much!
We will treasure every memory of John.

It's sad to see another long-time Montney/Fort St. John resident gone from this world but he won't be forgotten. I am so sorry Elsie, Connie, Cheryl and grandchildren for the loss of your husband, father, father-in-law and grandpa. Johnny was a kind and gentle person who was always so welcoming to Allan and then to me. Avery, our son, always requested a visit to Johnny whenever he was in Fort St John.
A vivid memory I have was when Johnny and Allan arrived at the lake. I had my telescope out looking at the sun. In spite of Allan’s hurry, Johnny took the time to find out what I was studying and even took time to have a look.
If Johnny was your friend, he was a true friend. He took the time to call and see how Allan was doing when he had not arrived for his regular coffee and treat visit. Johnny was a thoughtful person and he will be missed by so many people.

Uncle Johnny Martin was a special friend to his nieces and nephews. Always smiling, joking and teasing, he was a warm and happy presence at Walker family gatherings and at his home in Ft St John. Together with Elsie, they were really connected to us Walker cousins. I’ll always remember our trip in the mud in ‘62, and us kids driving the tractor with big, grinning Uncle Johnny.
