Obituary of Dorothy Ruth McElroy
It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we announce the passing of Dorothy McElroy on July 27, 2025.
Dorothy was born in Edmonton in 1949 to Jack and Hilda Harris of Edmonton. She grew up in the neighbourhood of Parkallen with her younger brothers Roy and Neil, attending Parkallen School and then Harry Ainley High School. She moved to Fort St. John in 1976 and met John in the late 70s. Dorothy and John have enjoyed over 45 years together. They raised Jill and Jonathan, and the family had many adventures that included curling, holidays, fishing, boating, flying, building a house, hosting cabin parties, farming, and nurturing grandchildren.
Dorothy loved and was loved by many friends from all walks of life. It didn't matter to her if you were 25 years older or 25 years younger. Over the years, she became a close friend, ally, confidante, surrogate auntie and 2nd mom to many. She was a favourite patron of many businesses in town and further afield. She deeply connected to all of her friends and family and had a way of making each person feel special and nurtured. There was no limit to her capacity to welcome new friends into her life, while she continued to cherish and spend time with those she had been close with for decades. She was the type of person who was always thinking about what other people might like and enjoy and would then present them with a spontaneous and unexpected gift or offer of help. She was a tiny lady who will leave a huge hole in our lives and the lives of many others that she touched with her generosity over the years.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on October 11 at Evangel Chapel, 10040 100 St, Fort St John, BC. Service to start at 11am with a tea to follow, everyone is welcomed.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dorothy's name to the Fort St John Hospital Foundation, Here. The Foundation's mission is to provide medical diagnostic and treatment equipment so that patients do not need to travel out of the community for care.
