When I think back to my childhood, Dorothy is in so many of those memories. She was one of my mom’s dearest friends, and in those days she felt like a mighty woman in a tiny body—full of spirit, determination, and kindness.
Every summer our families went camping together. Some of my favorite memories are out on the water—knee boarding on a hydroslide behind their Zodiak, jumping into the lake from a jungle swing at North Barrier, and spending hours in their pool when they still lived in Fort St. John. We also had great times in their motorhome on the way to the next adventure, music playing in our Walkmans as the miles rolled by. In the winter, John and Dorothy curled with my parents, and we kids had the run of the rink—playing hide-and-seek in empty lockers and racing our slinkys down the stairs.
Dorothy had a style all her own, always rocking her big sunglasses while driving her big Ford Bronco. She swore by the old gold-ring trick for curing a sty, was always offering to help, and had a way of making the ordinary feel like an adventure.
Even though I haven't seen her since I was a young girl, her laughter, her fun spirit, her quirks, and the way she made people feel will always stay with me. In my mind, she will always be the “cool” mom.
My heartfelt condolences to John, Jill, Johnathan, and all of Dorothy’s loved ones. She will be remembered with so much fondness.

Dorothy McElroy
Some people walk into your life quietly, without fanfare, but leave behind a lasting imprint of kindness, grace and unwavering generosity. Dorothy was one of those rare souls. Thoughtfulness was just a second nature to her. She always noticed and paid attention to the small things in our conversations, our exchanges and she responded, not out of any obligation but simply out of pure care.
John and Dorothy became clients of ours back in 2004, but over the past 21 years, she and I cultivated a friendship based on love for our families, love for baseball, LA Dodgers for her and Toronto Blue Jays for me, we shared recipes like what to do with her abundance of cherries, tv shows and good binges, gardening tips like shaving soap into the garden to keep the deer away and annual pictures of the calves that John worked so hard to bring to life. She was a fireball with an infectious giggle ! We shared some similar health issues that we talked about often, but she rarely complained, she had an energy and outlook that was geared towards caring for everyone else first. Dorothy seemed to know everyone in Fort St John… she talked about everyone like they were her best friend – her hair dresser, her nail lady, a neighbor … she seemed to know so many details about all the people in her life. And then there was her family ! Dorothy was the wife, Mom and Grandma that everyone would be so lucky to have. She loved her family fiercely, starting with John whom she felt worked way too hard but knew that he loved what he does. But more than just love, she simply enjoyed and adored spending time with Jonathan and Jill and the grandkids – you all brought her the greatest joy and fulfilling happiness.
Dorothy’s generosity went beyond any material giving, little gifts or thoughtful notes which she did often. She gave you her time, her attention and her encouragement. Whether it was sharing a laugh in good times or holding space during hard ones, she was always a source of strength and comfort. She was the kind of person that made the world feel softer, warmer, kinder and more hopeful because she was in it.
I will be endlessly grateful to have been Dorothy’s friend and I will miss our lively conversations, sometimes often and sometimes weeks apart – but whenever we connected it was like talking to an old friend and we picked up right where we left off. She profoundly touched the lives of so many, including mine. Rest in Peace Dorothy, I will miss you.

With great sadness I say goodbye to my friend. We have been friends since our boys were attending Charlie Lake Elementary. Dorothy was someone you couldn’t help but like. She made each person she came into contact with feel special and important. One of my favourite memories of Dorothy comes from years ago when we were both attending the provincial baseball playoffs. The weather was perfect but very hot and there wasn’t much shade for the fans. She invited me to go with her to a local store where she bought out their entire supply of umbrellas to hand out to the parents watching the games. There are hundreds of stories to be told about our treasured Dorothy. She is woven into the fabric of the lives of all of us lucky enough to have known her.
You will be missed friend.

Dorothy and John have been our neighbours for 22 years and we live only two places away from them. We didn’t know either of them very well! Condolences to her husband, their two children and the rest of the families!

I met Dorothy well over 40 years ago. They lived across the street from us, on Princess Crescent. I was friends with Jill and her mom was always so kind and funny. I'll always remember climbing into her giant Bronco when they'd pick me up to go to Girl Guides. Sending my love to her family as they grieve her passing.

When I was a kid, Johnny and I rode dirt bikes together, along with other friends. If we stopped by Johnathan’s house we were always greeted with a smile. She was always concerned for our safety and made sure we had full bellies before our next adventure.

I met Dorathy around six years ago when she came into the coffee shop I was working at, ordering the same drink every time and showering me with compliments. She finally asked me to go to the movies with her and I agreed being new to town. I was a little bit nervous. She insisted she bought my ticket and when we sat down and opened each other‘s purses, we realize that we had both snuck in snacks for each other to share. She was such a sweet soul. I’m so glad that we had kept in contact as penpals for the last several Years. Rest easy, friend.
