Obituary of Herbert Samuel Cushway

 

In loving memory of Bert Cushway

September 2, 1935 - May 12, 2025

 

 

  Bert Cushway was born on Sept 2, 1935 in Fort St. John, B.C. To John and Laura Cushway. His siblings were Gary, Valerie and Milton (deceased).  Bert also had several nieces, nephews and extended family. 

 

  Bert spent 33 meaningful years with Bella and George in Kamloops B.C. While living there he worked at AB Car Sales and enjoyed attending Kamloops Blazers hockey games.

 

  Later in life Bert returned to Fort St. John to be closer to family, particularly his sister Valerie. The two shared a deep bond and enjoyed many adventures together, often traveling to nearby towns to sightsee and visit friends. He also worked for 3 yrs at Arctech Welding as a shop cleaner where he was known as a dedicated and valued employee. 

 

  One of the more profound moments of Bert's later years was discovering and meeting a brother he had never known, Larry Hall, who traveled up from Montreal, Quebec with his two daughters, Wendy and Sue. These new connections brought great joy to Bert's life. The heartwarming reunion also brought many other family members together and they all met up at his favorite Aunt Betty's house.  

 

  Bert treasured his time with good friends like James Thinnings, and many others who held a special place in his heart. 

 

  In 2024, Bert moved into Abbeyfield House in Fort St. John, where he was warmly embraced by staff. Known for his affectionate and playful nature, he gave special nicknames to the caregivers he grew close to. He would light up when speaking of his special people and truly enjoyed his time with them. 

 

  Bert was a storyteller at heart and many heard of all the important jobs he held throughout his life. His stories will be remembered by all who knew him.

  Bert will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
