Charles Goodley

Obituary of Charles Ernest Goodley

With great sadness we announce the passing of Charles (Charlie) Ernest Goodley on March 30th, 2025, in Fort St. John, B.C.

Charlie was born in Peterborough, Ontario on August 16th, 1930, to Claude and Doris Goodley. Charlie was the youngest of the family’s 5 children, and a fraternal twin.

Charlie met the love of his life Janette, at a “Y” Dance and they were soon married in 1952. For the next 72 years they were inseparable and deeply devoted to each other. Together they raised a family, travelled, camped and never missed a family event. Charlie and Janette even went back to school together in their 70’s, to study science. This was when they discovered there was a healthy bit of academic competitiveness in their relationship. Charlie and Janette had the opportunity to take several cruises later in life, and Charlie soon discovered that it was his preferred way to travel. They were both in their 88th year, when they left Ontario and moved to Fort St. John, B.C., to be closer to their daughter.

As a young adult, Charlie discovered a passion for photography. While working in the mailroom at Loblaws Ltd by day, he attended Ryerson College of Art at night, to study photography. His work ethic and perseverance paid off, and he was transferred to the advertising department, and would later become the head photographer for Loblaws. Charlie rarely missed a day’s work, for almost 40 years. He truly loved his work.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents Claude and Doris, his brother Alan, his sister Margaret (Ellesworth), and his twin sister Joan.

Charlie is survived by his wife Janette, his daughter Christine (Jim), his son Jim (Amber), his brother Desmond, his grandchildren, Renee, Reanna, Reagan and Zachary. Charlie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews that he felt a strong bond too.

Charlie’s family wishes to express their gratitude for the professionalism, competence and compassion of the doctors, nurses, and care aides that were involved in Charlie’s care for the last two and half years at the Fort St. John Hospital, the North Peace Primary Care Clinic, the Heritage II Assisted Living, the B.C. Cancer Clinic and the Prince George Hospital.

A special thank-you to Charlie’s family doctor Dr. Aremu, for keeping such a close eye on Charlie and quarterbacking his care, over the past few years.

A celebration of life is planned for later in the spring. The date and time will be posted once arrangements are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles name can be made to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation. click here to make a donation.
