Walter Gerald McCarthy

February 17th 1936 - February 11th 2025

Walter Gerald was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Malachi & Kathleen McCarthy on February 17th 1936. As the firstborn, he was brother to Donald & Joan. Though he lived in Halifax and Cape Breton as a young child, he called Spryfield his hometown. Here is where he met some of the most important people in his life, including his best friend Billy and his future wife Marjorie. 

Wally was a man of many talents and hard work, starting his working life at 15 driving a delivery truck in Spryfield. Eventually he became a butcher in local grocery stores and at the NS Meat Packers. In the 1980’s he came out to Fort St. John, creating new roots in BC. He worked in construction, logging, running heavy equipment, ice making & as a Zamboni driver but he’d tell you he was a butcher by trade and a farmer at heart.

Wally is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie, his 5 children- Kevin, Kim, Judy, Joann (Darrell) and Gerry, 10 grandchildren- Brian, Bonna, Alissa (Jeremy), Lyndsay, Brittany, Jordyn (Alec), Kelsey, Chad, Natailya and Dylan (Makayla) and 16 great grandchildren- Parker, Kale, Naiya, Rylan, Brook, Colin, Mili, Valen, Hailey, Asher, Benson, Desiree, Colson, Eliana, Malcom and Briella. Wally was predeceased by his mother & father, brother & sister, sister in law, brothers in law, best friend Billy and many friends and loved ones. 

A Celebration of Life for Walter will be held on March 4th, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Taylor Curling Rink.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wright, Dr. Ehiaghe, the palliative nurses & care team, and the home care aides that kept him comfortable in his final days.
